The New Era, The Tsutomu Era

In the heart of Singapore's National Stadium, history unfolded as Singapore and China clashed in a riveting encounter. Marking the commencement of a new chapter for both nations with their respective managers. The match which took place on March 21, 2024, saw a massive crowd of 28,414 spectators daunting the colours of their national teams. All in anticipation for the introduction of newly appointed head coaches, Tsutomu Ogura and Branko Ivankovic, for Singapore and China PR, respectively.

Singapore looked like a rejuvenated side after being 2-0 down at half time. Wu Lei had doubled China’s lead (11’, 45+2’) and shades of our 6-1 defeat to them in 2013 enveloped the atmosphere of the national stadium. However, our Lions came out in the 2nd half with new found inspiration and energy; playing like Klopp’s Liverpool after conceding early.. An early goal from Faris Ramli, assisted by Lionel Tan (53’) and a superb finish by substitute Jacob Mahler (80’) got Singapore right back in the game at 2-2. Some fans were left angered by arguably controversial decisions by the referee, notably one late in the game where Safuwan was brought down “WWE”-styled in the box but a penalty was not awarded. Shouts of Referee Kayu(Colloquialism for Corrupt in Football) were chanted from displeased passionate Singapore fans who wanted a penalty. Singapore is set to play the reverse fixture against China at the Tianjin Olympic Centre Stadium on 26th March, Tuesday. Ryhan Stewart mentioned that the lions will be going for all 3 points in China. So tune in to what would be hopefully another exhilarating display of Ogura-Ball, and let's support our boys as they face this new era of football.
